What Does an Alternator Do?

An alternator is an electrical generator used in automobiles for powering their electrical systems and charging the battery. It converts mechanical energy into electrical energy by using a pulley-and-belt system to spin its rotor, which then produces alternating current (AC). The AC is converted to direct current (DC) with a rectifier before being sent to charge the battery and power the car's electrical components.

The alternator also helps the battery to maintain consistent voltage when it is running, which keeps all of the electrical systems working efficiently. In addition, modern alternators often include a voltage regulator that helps to keep the voltage output from fluctuating too much.

By providing a steady source of power to the car's electrical systems, an alternator keeps all components running smoothly and prevents battery drain. This is especially important if the vehicle has accessories that are powered by electricity such as heated seats or a stereo system. Without an alternator, these accessories would not be able to function properly and could cause damage to other parts of the car.
